Dr. Harry Hawthorne, a cardiac electrophysiology specialist at St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, used cryoblation, or cold therapy, in two heart procedures performed at the hospital Friday. The cryoblation heart procedures are the first to be performed in the area. Cryoblation has been available in the U.S. for a year and a half to two years. Cryoblation uses cold therapy to "injure" tissue, said Hawthorne, and was used in these cases to target atrial fibrillation which is the most common arrhythmia in human beings.

Dr. Harry Hawthorne discusses Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, is the most common type of irregular heartbeat. It occurs when one or both of the upper chambers of the heart -- called the atria -- don't beat the way they should. This can cause blood to pool in the left atrium, where a blood clot can form. If that clot breaks away, it can travel to the brain, where it can cause a type of stroke called an ischemic (is-KEE-mic) stroke.
